Harry Potter Day?

No, today was not Harry Potter Day, although we did buy two copies of the book. Today was Steph's birthday! Happy birthday Stephanie! We had a nice dinner at this little Thai place on Riverside in Rockford, and enjoyed each other's company tonight. Considering all the traveling we've done in the last week, doing too much tonight wasn't really an option.

Today the 7th and final book in the much loved Harry Potter series was released all over the world. Steph and I are big fans of the series, so much in fact, we bought two copies so we could both read it right away. One of the copies will eventually find its way to eBay, but for now, we'll both be devouring these over the next few weeks. I'm really looking forward to seeing how it all ends. For those of you who haven't read these, what the heck's wrong with you?!? The series is really quite good, and I highly recommend it.

Travleing Daze: Part Two

We had a great trip. I want to start this post off with that. We spent 5 great days in a beautiful area, ate some great food, saw some amazing things, and most importantly, spent some quality time with family. It's really too bad that it was all punctuated by this day.

The day started normally, with Steph and I saying our goodbyes to Kathie, Josh, and Noah, then driving the 30 miles or so to San Luis Obispo airport. We arrived with plenty of time, returned the rental car without incident, then made our way to the check-in counter. This is where the fun begins! Our flight was delayed. This was a bit stressful, as we only had about 40 minutes in between connecting flights, but the woman at the counter assured us that it was only a slight delay, and we should be able to make our flight to Chicago. The flight was an hour late. Needless to say, we assumed we missed our connecting flight, so when we arrived at LAX, we went to our original gate area to try to catch another. Guess what! Our connecting flight was delayed. Yes, both flights were delayed. This wasn't too bad, but we did have to wait for about an hour and 1/2 in LAX for our connecting flight to arrive. All in all, our traveling was delayed nearly 3 hours. Wow, pretty bad, right? Not so fast! The fun had just begun!

Steph and I boarded the bus to Rockford, and right before the bus was ready to leave, a woman and her daughter got on the very crowded bus and sat right behind us. The mother proceeds to call every freakin person in her directory and talk at roughly double the volume of a normal conversation. This went on for about 1/2 hour, then, after Steph stared at her for about 5 minutes, she stopped on the phone and began talking non-stop to her daughter about the most inane nonsence I've ever heard. They had a 5 minute conversation about whether or not VH1 was on basic cable. I'm not joking. And of course, the daughter was just as oblivious to her surroundings as mom, so she was essentially talking as loud as possible for about an hour straight. I can only equate this to paying $17 to be kicked in the groin for about an hour and 1/2. Crude, yes, but very true.

Well, like I said in the beginning of my little rant, we had a fantastic time, so I guess the torture of traveling for 12 hours was a small price to pay for 5 great days. It's good to be home!

Thursday: Montana de Oro, Farmers' Market in San Luis

It's 10:oo pm, we have to travel tomorrow, and I'm dead timed, so I'm going to keep this very brief. Today was a big day, and a lot of great stuff happened. Instead of trying to force it out of my muddled mind, I'm going to put this little placeholder here, along with my picture for today, and encourage you all to come back to this post tomorrow. When I get home I'll be putting up a better account of today's activities, so hopefully I won't be too wiped out then.

Wednesday: Hearst Castle, Elephant Seals

Today was a great day! Steph and I took a trip to San Simeon, to Hearst Castle. Hearst Castle is an amazing place, and every time we go to California, we try to go there at least once. This time we took the "Tour #4", which is a mostly outside tour of the gardens, the two pools, and ends in the wine cellar. This is probably the best tour we've been on, and since it's one of the less popular tours, instead of having a 30 person group, there were only about 12 or 15 people on our tour. It was really great. There's so much there that I would love to take time to shoot, but they whip you through there so fast, that it's difficult to get a lot of good shots. Fortunately, with the smaller group, I was albe to get some good ones.

After visiting Hearst Castle, we took a drive north on the 1 to view some local wildlife. This time of year, the Elephant Seals are on the shore, shedding their fur and looking quite lazy. These things are massive, and they look like they survive just to lay around and throw sand all over the place. They're pretty impressive beasts, and it's cool to see these animals live and in person instead of on Animal Planet.

Tomorrow we'll be heading to Montana de Oro, a local park that borders the Pacific and is pretty amazing. I should have some pretty amazing shots tomorrow.

Tuesday: Walking, Shooting, Shopping

Well, tonight I'm taking my sister's advice and hooking up to her lightning-fast wireless connection to post on the blog. I can't even describe to you how amazingly bad the hotel connection is. Imagine dial-up, shared to about 50 different people through one wireless router. It's worse than that. Lucky for me my sister is as big a tech lover as I am and she has high speed and a good router.

Today Steph, Kathie, and I waked the streets of San Luis Obispo, hitting all the little shops and eating an awesome lunch at the Natural Cafe. This is the second time we've eaten there, and for Steph it's great. It has a diverse menu, and a large vegetarian menu to choose from. I even don't mind eating there, as they have a few meat dishes that are really good. There are only a few, however, so now I know the difficulty she faces every time we go to a restaurant in good ol' Rockford.

After the shopping expedition, we took a short visit to the Mission in San Luis, then picked up my Nephew Noah at his preschool. Kathie and Noah went home to take a nap, so Steph and I went down to the state park here in Morro Bay. The views of the rock and the sea were breathtaking. I think I shot about 50 pictures up there, and got some really good stuff. We're now sitting at Kathie and Josh's house, and Josh just pulled up. We're going to eat some local fish fry, then just hang out with a couple cold ones. Time to eat! View today's photos here.

Monday: Walking and Talking

This is going to be a short post, since my eyes are dangerously close to closing on me, and I've been fighting for 15 minutes with this piss-poor hotel WiFi trying to bring this page up. I'm tired, irritated, and totally ready to sleep for about 10 hours.

Today was spent with my Sister Kathie, Stephanie, and myself browsing the various shops and areas of Morro Bay. We spent most of the day walking the streets and visiting the beach, then Steph and I were treated to a great dinner and dessert at Kathie & Josh's house. She offered her wireless for me to put up my post, and god, I wish I had taken her up on it. To say this hotel's connection is crap would be a travesty of understatement. Traveling Daze

Wow, what a day. After an early 5:30 am start, about 10 hours of traveling, and some quality time spent with my Sister and her family, I am completely spent. No amount of caffeinated beverages will keep me going any longer. Add to that the 26 hours straight that I was awake yesterday, and I'm one tired dude.

The day went pretty smoothly, but unfortunately I had very little time to actually take my camera out of the bag. This shot I took at O'Hare airport in Chicago. I was sitting at this kiosk that's provided for charging your laptop. It was pretty boring, waiting an hour and a half for our flight, when I looked to the seat next to me and saw this had written sign someone had left. It really struck me to see it there. I just thought it was really profound, and in a place so full of miserable people, I thought it was especially powerful. No one likes the actual travel part of traveling, and I just found it very refreshing to know that someone took the time to write that and put it there so people like me (and my fellow miserable travelers) could see it.

Hillside

This time, I got it. It happened again today where I was driving down the road, and I saw this field. I knew immediately that there was a photo there, and until I went home, got my camera, and tried to capture it, I couldn't rest. It's really gratifying when you see something like this and you're able to capture completely the beauty that you saw the first time you looked at it. Granted, I took about 40 shots, but out of those 40, this is the one that really shows what I see when I look at this field. I love this shot.

Okay, I'm officially dragging ass. It's 5:18 pm as I'm writing this, and I've been awake for 24 hours. I didn't have to work all night last night, so that has helped me to stay awake, but I am crashing fast. I'm trying to do the "old switcheroo" so I can be on a normal sleep schedule throughout our vacation in California. It's kicking me hard right now, but it will be worth it when we get there. I should be posting a lot of pictures all next week, so keep checking back!

Blast From the Past

What you're looking at is a minaturized version of something I used to make way back in the day. Now that I think of it, it really hasn't been that long since I made these things. This is a sink that's used in salons when you get your hair washed. It's made by a company called Belvedere USA Corp, my former employer. I worked there for about 11 1/2 years. Wow, that's a long time.

The process which is used to make these is really pretty interesting to watch, but not much fun to do. It requires heating the casting up to about 1700°, then covering it in porcelin enamel, which is basically ground up glass with different oxsides and pigments that give the bowl its color. Here's a few shots I took a couple years ago of the process:

The orange color you see is not the color of the bowl, it's orange because it's that hot. Believe me, this is not a job you want to do when it's 100° outside. Not pleasant at all. The job was pretty crappy, but the pay was good. Like I said, interesting to watch, not so much fun to do.

Laptop Bag

In preparation to our trip to California, I've been trying to decide for a couple weeks which laptop bag to buy. I really wanted something that didn't look like a traditional laptop bag, and really was close to buying this one, but since I was uncertain how my 17" Macbook Pro would fit in it, I finally decided to get a backpack. These things are not cheap, but I wanted something that I could put other things in besides my laptop. This pack was a little pricey, but buying it on Amazon saved me about $15, and with my free trial of Amazon Prime, I got it in two days with free shipping. Overall, it wasn't a bad deal. It has a ton of storage, and is padded really nicely for the computer. It's called the Swissgear Pegasus and it fits like a glove!

Favortie Shots #11: Hearst Castle

Hearst Castle, set upon the hills of San Simeon, is one of our favorite destinations when we visit California. This amazing place was built between 1919 and 1947, and was donated to the state of California in 1957. It's really remarkable to see it in person, and it's a place we visit every time we go West. Well, it looks like I'll be working on Saturday. Luckily, we'll probably only work 1/2 a day, but it stil throws all my plans out of whack.

Changing Weather

What a difference a day can make. Today, after I woke up of course, was beautiful. Cool temps, light breeze, and a beautiful sunset. I think it may have rained this afternoon, but I slept through all that.

I still haven't heard anything from my Union rep about Saturday, but right now I'm just counting on working it. It really stinks, and completely throws off my plans for the weekend, but I really can't afford to call in. I'm hoping eventually, if they hire us in full time, to become a Team Leader. Team Leaders can't have any disciplinary marks on their records, so missing work isn't a good idea for me.

Stormy Skies

We got nailed today with some pretty serious storms. Naturally, I slept through it all, but Steph tells me there were really high winds, and they lost power three times over the course of the day. I was getting ready to shoot when she told me the sky to the west looked cool. Although this is a pretty good shot, I probably missed this one by about 5 minutes. By the time I grabbed my camera and found an unobstructed view, the clouds had moved a bit.

Our vacation plans are progressing nicely, but we've hit a bit of a snag. They've scheduled me to work Saturday. I briefly considered calling in, but the attendance policy is a little harsh, and I really don't want the marks on my record. They tell us that we won't work all night, but I still really want the day off so I can prepare for our trip. There's still a slight chance I will get the night off, but I'll have to wait and see.

Fruit, Veggies, and Outages

Every week, when at the grocery store, I try to think of different things to bring to work for lunches. Oftentimes, just like at dinner, I find myself eating the same things over and over. I try to get as many fresh fruits and vegetables as I can, but Woodmans' produce leaves much to be desired. I'm looking forward to going to some local farmers markets this summer to hopefully find some better produce.

Well, we had another mass outage today. It actually started at about 1:40 am, went until 6 am, went out again sometime around 2:00 pm, then came back on about an hour ago. I called customer service again today, and actually got someone competent! What a shock! He was telling me that it was ridiculous that we've been having this problem since May and that it had not been fixed yet (tell me about it!). He gathered together all the info and charts showing the outages and forwarded then on to his supervisor. He will then send them to the local service office, who hopefully will get it fixed sooner rather than later. He's also supposed to call to update us within the next 48 hours. This guy was so good that he even got our account credited back to the start of the problems. He did this not only for the internet, but he also got us a $40 credit for our cable which we haven't even had much of a problem with! We should be getting over $100 in credit. That's really nice, but I'd rather just have my internet working, thank you. He also canceled the service appointment for Friday, since it's pretty obvious that this is a massive problem for the whole town, and not just with us. I guess the moral here is that if you keep calling and calling, eventually you'll get lucky enough to talk to someone who gives a shit.

Starry Night

Tonight is one of those nights that you can see a billion stars in the sky. I really wanted to try to capture that in this photo, but an image can really not do it justice. Digital photography does have its limitations when it comes to nighttime photography, but I thought this turned out pretty good.

Mass Outages

The past month or so, we’ve been experiencing major problems with our internet connection. Sometimes it works, sometimes it doesn’t, but there isn’t a day that goes by that we don’t have at least one outage. This is unacceptable. We’re paying over $40 a month for this service, and I expect to get my money’s worth. I’ve called customer service about four times, and each time they give me some other line of B.S. It’s always well over a week before they can get a service tech out here, and oftentimes, when I call, there is an outage in most of the town. Why do they need to send a tech here if it’s a mass outage? The first time we scheduled an appointment, the guy showed up well after I had gone to bed, and after that day, we really didn’t have problems for about a week, so I thought it had been fixed. Not even close. We’ve scheduled another appointment, but of course the tech wont be able to get here until next Friday. The worst part of all this is that there are no alternatives to Mediacom in our area. I could always go back to Directv for the television, but there are virtually no other companies present out here for internet. There is a company called T6 Wireless which is a provider out here, but the prices are through the roof, and when my cable connection is actually working, my download speeds are well over 5 Mb/s. I guess we’ll have to tough it out and hope they’ll eventually get it fixed....

Eating Habits

It always seems like I'm eating the same things. It makes trips to the grocery store much simpler, but in the long run, dinner can get pretty boring. It's tough to enforce variety when I'm cooking just for myself. I really like the things I eat, and I don't feel like I eat poorly, but it can get pretty repetitive. Fortunately, with warmer weather comes more cooking out, so that changes things a bit. I've had this problem for most of my adult life, and I'm sure that many of you have the same problem. It's just far to easy with life's fast pace to get stuck in a rut.

On a completely (odd) side note, I had a dream that I bought an iPhone today. I've been so inundated lately with iPhone coverage and commercials, that I'm starting to buy into the hype. I'd really love to get one, but the $600 price tag is way too high, and I have a year left on my current contract with US Cellular. I'm hoping eventually that they will offer this amazing piece of tech to all the carriers, not just AT&T, and it will drive the price down. It's just too expensive right now.

New Baby! / 4th of July / Chasing Strays

Man, what a lot to talk about today. I had about three different things I wanted to talk about today. Being the 4th of July isn't really a big thing for me, but my sister Jennee gave birth yesterday to her second child, a daughter, Madelynn Clorice. We went to the hospital this afternoon to see her, and of course I forgot my camera. Needless to say, she's adorable! Babies are so cute when they're newborns. Everyone I've talked to says looks like Jennee when she was born, but all babies look alike to me... :)

When I took a walk around the yard tonight, looking for something to shoot, I saw this cat sleeping on our picnic table. Now I've seen this guy before, but never so close up. I'd really love to get close enough to pet him, even though I know that's an idiotic thing to do, but it will have none of that. This is about as close as I could get to him before he ran away. I'm convinced that this cat is related somehow to our cat Cotton.

Failed Experiments, Successful Results

This was an odd night for me, photographically speaking. I had the brilliant idea that I was going to photograph a field full of lightning bugs for my nephew, completely blocking out of my mind the inadequacies of digital when shooting in the dark. I was going to do this because in California, where Noah is from, they don't have fire flies! I never knew this until my sister moved out there. I guess I just assumed they were everywhere. Obviously, this idea didn't work. Had I been shooting film, it may have looked like I had intended. When I got my camera home, the photos I opened were not what I had intended, but for some reason, I could see something in them that was usable. They were very noisy, poorly lit, and none of the bugs were visible, but a little spooky and surreal. I just needed to tweak it. So I opened up Photoshop, played around for about 1/2 hour, and this is what I got. I'm really happy with the results! It really reminds me of some infrared shots I took a couple years ago. Very grainy, very surreal, yet also very mundane. It's something you see every day, only lit in a different light. You can view the full sized shot HERE. Grillin'

One of may favorite things in the summer is cooking most of my meat on the grill. It's very nice to put on a steak, a couple brats, or a chicken breast, then sit outside and enjoy the great weather. Being a vegetarian, Steph appreciates it as well, since the house won't smell like a steakhouse when I'm done. The grill I have now has really seen better days, but I'm holding out on buying a new one until everything at work settles down, and we figure out if we're going to be moving within the next couple years.

Wilderness in the Weeds

Our cat Punkin loves to go outside. He's constantly at the back door, staring longingly at the doorknob as if willing it to open. He lurks inside when we're coming home, trying desperately to escape at the slightest motion of the opening door. Finally, when all else fails and he's truly desperate, he howls. He doesn't squeak, he doesn't meow, he howls.

I try to imagine sometimes what it must be like for him to go from a domestic house cat to a stalking, prowling hunter. He's always slinking stealthily this forest of tall weeds near the railroad tracks, looking for the slightest sign of an afternoon snack. A few times we've opened the back door only to find his latest catch, waiting for us like a macabre offering. He always comes home in the end, however. He knows full well where his meal ticket is.

June: In Review

Six months. Six months I've been doing this, and it's now become part of my daily routine, much like that first cup of coffee or brushing my teeth. It really doesn't seem like six months have already passed, but considering how much I work, the days can seem to flow one into another. June was another really busy month. We finally made some vacation plans, I shot a beautiful wedding, and spent some time editing those hundreds of photos. I finally sold my computer, finished my yard work, and spent way too much time at the doctor's office. July should be a great month, and I should have some awesome pictures to share from scenic Morro Bay!

Goodbye PC!

Whew! I finally sold my PC. When I announced my intentions of making the switch to Mac, I thought a good way to offset the cost would be to sell my old, but still pretty good, Dell desktop. I think at the time I had an overinflated value of the used machine, but in the long run I got a pretty good amount of money for a PC that is a couple of years old. I was approached at work last night by someone I know pretty well, and we worked out a price that was good for both of us.

Tonight I'll be stopping in at a newly opening business in Belvidere to do a "stress test" of sorts. A former co-worker from Belvedere USA Corp is opening a gamer-targeted store called Virtual Insanity that will feature networked PCs, console systems, and internet access. I've been to places like this before, and I have to honestly say that the experience wasn't all that great. Hopefully they'll do a much better job.

Sticker Shock

This morning after work, I made my return trip to see Dr. Flynn about the issues I've been having lately. Based on the moderate success I've been having with the Albuterol inhaler, he decided to prescribe an inhaler that had a more long lasting effect. Albuterol is more of an "emergency" inhaler, that is really only used when one is having serious breathing problems. He wanted me to try something that was more of a daily medication, while still having the Albuterol when I'm feeling bad. When I went to pick this inhaler up, my complete lack of prescription drug insurance really hit me hard. I was stunned when the pharmacist told me the total of $133.00. What can you do? I had to pay for it. Hopefully this expensive little bottle of powder will do the trick.

Favorite Shots #10 / Vacation Planning

This shot was taken a few years back in Morro Bay, California. There is a giant rock formation in the middle of the bay that is really amazing. You can see odd formations like this all over it's surface. Morro Bay is where my sister Kathie lives, and it's also where Steph and I are going in about 3 weeks.

Chrysler scheduled a week shut down in July, and Steph took that week off as well. We decided that it would be a good time to take a trip out to California and visit Kathie, Josh, and my nephew Noah. Kathie and Noah will be here in Illinois for a couple weeks in July, but Josh won't. We'd love to see him too, and it will be great to go away for a while. We'll be staying ath La Serena Inn in Morro Bay. It has really good rates, even better reviews, and lots of amenities.

I have some other news regarding Chrysler. I just found out last night that all the people in my situation, the so called "Enhanced Temporary Employees", will be moved from the Paint and Body Shop areas to Assembly. This sucks. All the full time people in Assembly really want our jobs because Assembly rarely works a full 8 hours a day. The unfortunate reality of an assembly line is if one piece breaks, everyone downstream is in trouble. Basically, if Body or Paint has any problems throughout the night, Assembly gets sent home early. I guess it's not a big deal, as long as I'm still on 3rd shift, but I realy have no idea right now how this will all shake down.

Seas of Green

I really enjoy this time of year. For those of you who are not from Illinois, the area I live in is pretty flat and is populated by corn and soybean fields. This time of year, the corn is getting to about head height, and when you look over the landscape, all you can see is green. It's something that those of us who live here really take for granted. We see it every day, so the beauty of it can be lost on us. This photo really doesn't do it justice. It's also really cool to drive down the backroads late summer, when the corn is over the top of your car. It's like driving down green corridors, and it feels like you're in the middle of nowhere.

Defective

About 5 months ago, I invested in some really good earbuds for use with my iPod. I work in a really loud environment, and I wanted something that sounded good and blocked out a lot of background noise. After pretty extensive research, I decided to buy a pair from a company named Etymotic. The headphones sound fantastic, and they block out more decibels than the earplugs provided to us. Unfortunately, about 2 weeks ago, the right ear piece started buzzing. It has gradually gotten worse over the last week, and today it was completely unusable. Lucky for me they have a one year warranty, but it is still a pain to have to send them back. It's really frustrating to spend $70 on something and have it only last about 5 months! The customer service rep I talked to was very polite, and everything I've read suggests their customer service track record is pretty good. I just hope they get them turned around quickly. I'm really spoiled now, and I'm not looking forward to using bad headphones!

Wildberries

When we first moved into our home, the yard was full of many different plants and flowers. One of these various plants was a raspberry bush that the previous owner put in a very poor location. It wasn't getting any sun, it wasn't producing many berries, and those it did produce were quickly gobbled up by the local wildlife before they could ripen properly. I decided to mow it under. To my surprise, the next year it regrew in another location. Well, that year we had the same results. I've mowed that bush down every year for the last 5 years, but this year it migrated to an area filled with other plants that I don't mow. This year, the thing is absolutely covered with berries. I picked quite a few today, and they're delicious. I guess I won't mow it down anymore!

Tie-Dyed

Well, I decided to stay home tonight instead of playing poker. I thought tonight I'd rather spend some time with Stephanie, since that time is few and far between. Steph had a creative outburst today, stemming from her purchase of a new sewing machine. She spent a couple hours doing some tie-dying, and the last few hours making a skirt from fabrics she bought Friday.

Regarding Tuesday's post, I found a printer that will print my blog in a hardcover, bookstore quality book for around $60. I thought that was a damn good deal considering everything else I've seen was around $40 for a 20 page book. This is for roughly 200 pages, which will be more than enough. I've also reserved the web address on blogger for "Photo a Day: 2008 Edition". I don't know if I will continue with this through next year, but I just wanted to make sure I had it. If I can keep this going indefinitely, it would be great to have books printed every year, sort of like a high school yearbook of my life. Who knows!

Another Poker Night

Tomorrow night I will again go to Gary's house for a little poker. This time it looks like we'll be playing just a small cash game, since the turnout probably won't be that great. It's hard to get a lot of people on a Saturday night when the weather is so nice. I actually prefer a cash game to tournament style when it comes to Texas Hold 'Em. While the potential winnings in a tournament game are typically much higher, a cash game allows you to play a little looser and take more risks. I've certainly won far more money in tournaments, but it always seems like I have more fun at the cash games.

Back to the Doctor

Well, it's been about a month since I last visited the doctor, and I haven't seen any improvement. I still have discomfort in my chest, difficulty breathing, and some coughing. Of all the potential things that the nurse practitioner said it could be, the most likely seems to be asthma. The inhaler really helps, but only for about an hour, then all the symptoms return. She told me that there are medications that will last throughout the day, so that will probably be what I get from all this. Unfortunately, my crap health insurance doesn't cover office visits or prescription meds. The last visit, with the prescriptions, cose me nearly $170. Hooray for illness!

Strays

Our small town is filled with stray cats. With all the farmhouses on the outskirts, the population is on a steady upswing. We also have a neighbor that we feel may actually be an animal hoarder. I'm sure that's probably way off base, but the guy always seems to be surrounded by cats. Every year another of his animals has a litter, and the whole process starts over again. This year there was three kittens, and I'm quite certain they're related to our cat Cotton. Cotton was a stray that we rescued, and I've seen cats around town that look very much like him. We'd love to take care of all of them, but it's just not possible.

Empty Albums

I know I've talked about this before, but one of my pet-peeves about digital photography is that I rarely, if ever, have prints made. I was listening to one of my favorite podcasts at work last night, when the host, Leo Laporte, was talking about things we grew up with that are no longer around. The one thing he talked about that really resonated with me was the photo album. With photo hosting sites like flickr, it is far easier to show and view our photos than ever before. These sites are great and convenient, but there's no replacing the sensation of holding a print (or a book of them) in your hands. I started thinking about that in relation to this blog. What's going to happen after the year is up? It's very likely that I will continue to do something very similar to this, but what happens in 20 years after the fact? 30 years? Will Blogger be around then, still preserving my year of photographs and writing? It's not likely. I've been seriously considering, after the year is up, having the entire blog, photos included, printed in book form so I have something physical I can pick up and look at 30 years from now. I just think it's important that I preserve this year of my life in something more permanent and secure than a couple websites. Can anyone recommend a service that does things like this?

Favorite Shots #9: More Wedding Stuff

Since I've shot about 550 pictures in the last three days, and frankly, I'm really sick of my camera right now, I thought I'd put up one of my favorite wedding shots. The above shot was one of those "happy accidents". For some reason, the camera metered off the window behind the couple instead of the couple themselves, and the result was this beautiful silhouette. This is one of those things that you're really happy to get, but it can frustrate me to know that it was a total accident. Fortunately, when these things happen, you learn that not only is it possible to get these shots, you learn how they can be done.

Now comes the fun part! Now I will take the roughly 500 photos I shot yesterday, look through them with iPhoto, pull the good ones into Photoshop, and do any touch-up work that is required. For all the formal shots, I usually take three of each so I know I'll have one good one. You want to account for people blinking, not smiling, etc, plus you want to take a shot exposed correctly, one that's overexposed, and one that's underexposed, just in case your meter isn't quite reading correctly. It's a lot of shots to take, but when you're shooting digital and you don't use up any film, so who cares, right? The iPhoto is something I'm really using for the first time, and unfortunately for you PC users, it's only on the Mac. It allows me to easily import all my photographs from the memory cards, then look through them all and decide which ones I'll run through Photoshop. I used to pull them all into Photoshop, but this is much easier. I really love it. It will take me about a week to go through all the pictures, sice I prefer to process them in bite-sized chunks. It would be far too tedious to do them all at once, and I really want to do the best job I can. I do admit, however, that as tedious as this part can be, looking at all the shots for the first time with digital is a close as you can get to the excitement of cracking open that envelope of fresh prints and seeing all the shots you took with your film camera. It's not quite the same, but it's close.

The Big Day

Man, what a day. Today was Dan and Michelle's wedding, and everything went off great. I got a bit of a sunburn, took about 500 pictures, and drove myself to the point of exhaustion. I wouldn't have it any other way.

The day started (for me) with photos before the wedding at roughly 12:30. The wedding started about 1:30, ended at about 2:00, and we finished with the "formals" at exactly 3:00. For any photographers reading this, you know that these are the toughest shots. Multiple set ups, a lot of people in your ear, and a lot of running around, this is the longest part of the day. I was lucky to have a great group of people, and a lot of help, so things went very smoothly. The reception came and went, with the entertainment provided by Mic Hog Karaoke, which coincidentally, is a business owned by my dad! He did a great job, and really worked his ass off for 8 1/2 hours.

These three shots I've posted are a few that really stuck out while i was uploading tonight, and it's shots like these that really make me love being a photographer. I'll happily sit through all the formal portraits just to get these gems. Although I'm certainly done with weddings, I still smile when I see shots like this.

Rehearsal

I'm sure I've mentioned my brother in law's wedding this Saturday, but I don't think I've mentioned that I'm doing the photography. I've also decided that this will likely be the last wedding I shoot, unless I'm absolutely hard-up for money. It's just a little too stressful for me. I couldn't have picked a better wedding for my last. The location is in a local arboretum, and as you can see from my picture today, it's absolutely beautiful. It's going to be a bright, sunny day, and although it's going to be pretty hot, at least there's no rain in the forecast. I'll be sure to put up a few shots from tomorrow so you can see some of my "professional" work.

Movies, Disappointment

I joined my dad at the movie theater this afternoon to finally go see Spiderman 3. As I said yesterday, I've heard that it sucks, but I really wanted to see it on the big screen as I've seen the previous two. I should have waited for the dvd. Now don't get me wrong, the movie certainly had its moments. Venom was amazing, and the fight scenes, especially the final battle, were awesome. I do not, however, under any circumstances, ever again want to see a brooding, emo Peter Parker. What a load of crap. The whole concept makes me nauseous. I also think this movie fell into the Batman trap, in trying to cram too many villains into one movie. The first Batman movie was fantastic. Only one villain to contend with, providing plenty of time for the development of the character. The sequels, however, all had multiple villains, which made the films seem rushed, with virtually no character development whatsoever. I think Sam Raimi really tried to do too much here. Having the New Goblin, Venom, the Alien Costume, and the Sandman all in the same film was a total overkill. You could've just done a film with Venom and it would've been great. The movie wasn't horrible, but to call it good would be a bit of an overstatement.

The day wasn't a complete loss. I did get to spend some time with my Dad, which I don't do often enough, and we also stopped over at my sister Jennee's house to visit her, her husband Jason, and my nephew Nathan. It was good to see you guys!

Finished Product

This is a shot of some (slightly bug-eaten) Day Lilies growing in our yard, and is a good representation of some of the beautiful stuff I had to take out on this newest project. Fortunately, I finished it today. I went into Rockford this afternoon, bought a truckload of mulch, and put it all down. What a difference a little mulch can make! It look much better than the overgrown mess that used to be there. Now we just need to replace those boarded-up windows the previous owners left us with.

I didn't get quite as much done today as I had hoped, but it was so damn hot today, and since asthma has been an issue for me lately, I didn't want to over do it. I guess I can leave the mowing for Friday. Tomorrow I'm going to (finally) see Spiderman 3 with my dad. I know, it sucks, but I want to see it anyway.

Bricklayer

Today I've spent about an hour digging a trench and laying the border bricks in the area I've been working on. Today I was supposed to go get the mulch, but I'm not really keen on getting red dye all over our new recliner, so I'll put that off for tomorrow. It was no surprise that my measurements were a bit off, so I was short two bricks. It's no big deal, but it is a bit of an annoyance. When I go to get them tonight, I'll also be buying some of that black paper stuff that blocks the growth of weeds and grass in areas such as this. I'm looking forward to having this finished so I can relax on my vacation.

Under Pressure

Wow. Sometimes I really have no concept of time. I didn't get nearly as much done today as I thought I would. I decided to pressure wash the siding first. I got started around 1:45, and the next thing I knew, it was 5:00! It really took me far longer to do that then I ever planned on. So unfortunately, I didn't get time to start putting the bricks in. That means I'l have to get an early start tomorrow so I can get them all out of my truck. On Saturday, Steph and I bought a new recliner at Slumberland, and I have to pick it up tomorrow. The truck was overloaded enough with hundreds of pounds of bricks in it, there's no way I'm going to add more weight then drive it around some more. As to the pressure washing, you wouldn't believe how well that worked. The house needed it pretty badly, but I really had no idea how bad it was until I started taking the stuff off. The house was so bright that with the sun hitting it, you literally couldn't look at it directly. Yowza, that's white!

Supplies

Since I'm off all this week (huzzah!), I'll be doing some much needed work around the house. My first job will be to finish the job I started a couple weeks ago, by taking these bricks we bought tonight and putting up a small border around the newly planted bushes on the South side of the house. They were really far more affordable than I had anticipated. I actually thought we'd be spending twice what we did, so that was a nice surprise. We also picked up a pressure washer, as our siding is looking pretty dirty.
